13 October 2015

This is the anniversary of the death of Pavlos Melas ( + 13 October 1904).  Here’s some information about this hero.  See if you can answer the questions following his biography.

A hero?s history

Pavlos_Melas_Portrait

Pavlos Melas, an architect of the Macedonian Struggle, was born in Marseilles in 1870.  In 1886 he     became an army cadet and by 1891 he was an artillery second lieutenant.

In those days, Bulgarians used to send armed gangs (comitadjis) into Macedonia so as to frighten      Macedonians and make them renounce their Hellenic identity by force.  Turkey (then occupying  Macedonia) not only tolerated this situation but also encouraged it.  Macedonians had to resist by  taking up arms, too.  They also asked help from their fellow-Hellenes who were free.  So, Greek  officers organised small, armed groups in order to protect the Hellenic population in Macedonia.

Pavlos Melas was one of these officers.  In August 1904 he secretly entered Macedonia at the head of  80 men (from Macedonia, Crete and Laconia) under the pseudonym Captain Miches Zezas.  Soon,  their action puts a check on Bulgarian terrorism and raises Macedonians? hopes.

However, in October of the same year, while Pavlos Melas and his men were in a village called  Statista, near the town of Castoria, some Bulgarian betrayed them to the Turks.  In the ensuing battle Pavlos was shot dead.  His death shook Greece and strengthened the Macedonian Struggle.

Statista was later renamed Melas in honour of the hero. ?
